Welcome to Pleasant View

thumbnail IMG 7322What is Becky's role at Pleasant View Golf Course?

Becky is our Head Golf Professional and Event Coordinator. She manages the golf shop staff, starters, rangers and golf car attendants. She also helps with merchandising, preparation and implementation of golf/non-golf outings, as well as league management.

What is her background? What did she do before Pleasant View Golf Course?

Becky grew up in Middleton. A year before beginning high school, Dewey Stendahl started the Middleton High School Girls Golf Program. She played golf for MHS for four years, graduated, and began college at UW-Madison. There she studied Consumer Science with an emphasis in Personal Finance. After college she worked at M&I Bank and eventually left to work at NSI, a division of West Bend Mutual Insurance Company. Becky worked at NSI for ten years in IT and Product Configurations. In 2015, she started working at PVGC in a full-time management position.

How did Pleasant View Golf Course come into Becky's life?

Becky started golfing at Pleasant View when she was 14 years old, after choosing to pursue golf at the high school level, contrary to volleyball, at the advice of her brother, Ben (who is a volleyball coach). She began working at PVGC in high school, starting in the golf shop. She remembers using color-coded paper tee sheets and which color represented each day of the week (if you know her, you’re not surprised by this). She later began working in the Food & Beverage Department, gaining experience in the bar and on the beverage cart. Becky continued to work at PVGC part-time through college. She also stayed involved in the MHS Girls Golf Program throughout college by volunteering as a coach. Becky eventually took over the MHS Girls Golf Program in 2013. Since then, the program has two state titles, two state runner-ups, as well as many former players who have gone on to play at the NCAA Division 1 college level. Upon taking a full-time management position for PVGC in 2015, she began running the Food & Beverage Department and coordinating non-golf events. Over the last few years she has gained experience in all golf course operations; teaching lessons and running women’s ‘Chip & Sip’ lesson programs, running golf outings, etc.. Becky recently has decided to pursue her passion in the golf industry further by enrolling in PGA schooling. She is now about half way done!thumbnail IMG 5380

Aside from working at Pleasant View Golf Course, what are her other interests/passions?

Becky’s passion is coaching, mentoring, and building relationships with her high school golfers. Her goal is to impact their lives in a positive way and teach them more than just the game of golf. She also enjoys spending time with her family (husband Gary, weiner dog Gretel, parents, brother and his girlfriend and nieces and nephew). Her parents are super supportive of PV and they are always helping with tournaments and supporting her goals/career. She also likes taking trips with family and friends. Her favorite vacation spot is Door County. She devotes a lot of time to the Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin, where she is the Treasurer. In addition, she recently got into working out and leading a healthy lifestyle.

What does she feel is Pleasant View Golf Course’s most unique characteristic?

Becky feels that having 27 holes plus a par 3 course and the diverse terrain (not many other courses have all that) is one of the most unique characteristics of Pleasant View. Additionally, the history of PVGC sitting atop “Goat Hill” is another unique characteristic. She misses the old goat statue that used to sit outside the old clubhouse.

Where does Becky see Pleasant View Golf Course going in the future?

Becky hopes to continue promoting golf to women. She would like to expand her women’s ‘Chip & Sip’ lesson programs to inspire more women to play golf and teach them that golf can be enjoyed by all. She sees PVGC continuing to maximize its potential and evolve. She is always looking for new ideas and opportunities to improve PVGC.

If she could choose three people to be in her foursome who have influenced her passion for golf the most, who would they be and why?

Becky would definitely have Dewey Stendahl in her foursome. He was her elementary school phy ed teacher and high school golf coach. He was quite possibly the kindest, quietest, most influential person in her life. He started the MHS Girls Golf Program in 1994 and was her mentor for coaching. She can’t say enough about him. She wishes he was still alive and able to play some cross-country golf with her at Pleasant View.

The second person in her foursome would be her brother, Ben White. He was the first person to encourage her to pursue golf. Without him pushing her to golf instead of volleyball, who knows where she would be now. With him being a boys volleyball coach at Middleton, he helped mentor her in coaching as well. She always looked up to him, especially recently in his battle with cancer. His strength is an inspiration.

The third person joining Becky in her foursome would be Jeff Kenas. They taught junior lessons together at Pleasant View 20+ years ago, he was the Varsity Girls Golf Coach at Middleton prior to Becky taking over the program, and they still have remained close friends. He continues to mentor Becky in coaching, golf, and in life.

thumbnail IMG 5219What's in her golf bag?

Becky uses a Sun Mountain Speed Cart push cart because she feels that walking is important and a great way to burn some calories. Her golf bag is a Titleist Players 4 Stand Bag, purple and black, very stylish! Her Woods are a combination of Titleist and TaylorMade. She uses a Titleist TS1 Custom 10.5 Driver with a Mitsubishi Fukuki 45 gram A-Flex shaft. She had it cut 1” short for her height. This is her favorite club in her bag. She also has a Titleist 917F2 Fairway Wood that is a 16.5 Degree loft and has a Diamana 50 gram Ladies Flex graphite shaft. Another Fairway Wood she uses is a TaylorMade M2 5HL 21 Degree loft with a 55 gram Senior Flex graphite shaft. Becky enjoys her Titleist 818 H1 25 Degree Hybrid with a 60 gram Senior Flex graphite shaft for the longer par 3’s. Her irons (5-9, P, A) are TaylorMade M6’s with Fujikura A-Flex shafts. Her wedges include a Titleist SM6 56 Degree S Grind Vokey and a Titleist SM7 60 Degree S Grind Vokey. Becky’s putter is a Titleist Scotty Cameron GOLO 5 33” 2 Degree Flat with a Matador Red grip.

I enjoyed seeing her “extras” in her bag as well. I found a very cool Pleasant View vintage head cover; an Orange Whip training aid to get the muscles going; some alignment sticks; Titleist Players gloves and FJ rain gloves, multiple to match all conditions; Titleist Cart Mitts for the cold days; a Bushnell Pro2 Range Finder; Martini Tees; PVGC Medicated SPF30 chapstick; Bug Soother to keep the gnats and mosquitos away; a PuttOut training tool; Women’s FootJoy slip-on golf shoes; a groove cleaner; a permanent marker for keeping score; towels, probably more than necessary; a PVGC Bag Tag; Altoids, wintermint flavor; a valuables pouch; ball markers, the Cardinal State Champs one is her favorite; a repair tool, hot pink with a PV logo ball marker; and golf balls...MANY! Becky plays Titleist ProV1 #5 personalized thumbnail IMG 5251golf balls with ‘BDUBS’ imprints. Good thing she pushes her bag on her push cart and doesn’t carry it...there’s a lot in that bag!

What does the future hold for her? What are Becky's aspirations?

Becky’s goal is to finish her PGA schooling and to become a PGA Golf Professional. In addition, she would like to continue to coach golf and help make Pleasant View the best it can be.

Is there anything that she misses about “old Pleasant View?” What does she not miss?

She misses the 16th hole from the old 18-hole course. This hole is now a combination of Lake 6 and 7. Becky also misses the fake gator in the pond on what is now Lake 8. She misses the old clubhouse and the goat statue that used to be outside it. PSA...if any one knows the whereabouts of the old goat statue, please let us know, Becky wants it! She doesn’t miss the trees that used to be in the middle of the fairways on Prairie 1 and Woods 6 as they seemed to always get in her way.

Do her co-workers have any nicknames for her? If so, what are they?

thumbnail IMG 1206What is Kevin's role at Pleasant View Golf Course?

Kevin has been our Golf Course Superintendent for 20+ years. He is the head of our Maintenance Department and he knows every square inch of our 300-acre property. Each week, Kevin plans out the tasks and projects for the Grounds Crew.  He carefully assigns tasks to specific staff members each morning, writing their duties for the day on a board in the maintenance office. Through his many years of experience, he has learned to be flexible. After all, he can’t control the weather. He does the majority of the planning, scheduling, and assignments for course maintenance and makes sure that the course is in pristine condition each day. As the demands of the golf course have evolved throughout his time as Superintendent, he has learned to adapt. From starting work as a young adult on a maintenance crew of only three guys, to now managing over 20, he is appreciative of his crew and all that they do for our golf course.

What is his background? What did he do before Pleasant View Golf Course?

Kevin grew up in Middleton when it was merely a village of four-thousand people or less. The first time he was on a golf course was at the age of 10 when he and his cousin caddied for his dad and uncle at PVGC. Little did he know what was in store for him. Kevin graduated from Middleton High School at the top of his class and a member of the National Honors Society. School always came easy to him and from a young age he had a knack for reading and writing. When he was only in 6th grade, he was writing sports articles for the local newspaper. Kevin went on to college at UW Madison, where he studied Agriculture, Journalism, and History. Going into college his dream was to become an author, and write books while living in the Alaskan wild. After two years of college, Kevin started to get burnt out. Him and a friend decided to change their pace. They bought a 1972 Volkswagen van and traveled out west for 13 months, gaining more perspective and experience than a lifetime would give most people. While traveling, Kevin saw things that he never thought existed and his eyes were opened to a whole new world, apart from his traditional middle-class upbringing. Here, Kevin realized that he wanted to do something outdoors for the rest of his life.

thumbnail IMG 5259How did Pleasant View Golf Course come into Kevin's life?

Kevin returned to Middleton after being on the road for 13 months, and at the suggestion of a friend, applied for a job on the Grounds Crew. At that time, he was one of three department staff members, and he worked for $2.85/hour. At first, he dreaded coming to work each day, and found his supervisor then challenging to work for. His supervisor later went on to be one of the best mentors and friends of his life. He worked on and off at PVGC through his young adulthood, occasionally trying out other jobs; always coming back to PVGC, oftentimes for less money, because he loved that he could work outdoors. It was challenging work and long hours, but it soon became his passion.

Aside from working at Pleasant View Golf Course, what are his other interests/passions?

Kevin is very passionate about music. He has been to many concerts in his lifetime. His favorite artists are: CCR (Creedence Clearwater Revival), The Beatles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Waylon Jennings, and Linda Ronstadt. Kevin is also passionate about sports and takes pride in his local teams. He is a big Packers fan, as well as Bucks and Brewers. He enjoys reading historical books, writing, gardening, and spending time with his dogs.

What does he feel is Pleasant View Golf Course’s most unique characteristic?

Kevin enjoys the topography of our property. He has spent arguably more time than anyone on our golf course, and appreciates all the beauty it has to offer. He still swears that he saw a mountain lion out on the course 20 some years ago. I believe him.

Where does Kevin see Pleasant View Golf Course going in the future?

Kevin knows that PVGC will only continue to grow. He admits that one of the most challenging times of his life was during the grow-in of the new course 20+ years ago, but he takes pride in all of the success that has come from his hard work and days spent working sunup to sundown. Kevin said that Jeremy pushes him, and it’s stressful at times, but he admits ultimately it’s good and is in the best interest of the course. Kevin’s goal is to make PVGC the best public golf course in the area. Personally, I think he’s already succeeded at that.

Who has influenced his passion for golf the most and why?

Kevin admits that he doesn’t have a huge passion for golf; he does however, have a great passion for golf courses. He rarely watches golf tournaments, but he enjoys watching the birds-eye footage of the courses prior to tee-off. He doesn’t play much anymore, but looks fondly on the time he spent playing with three of his brothers, exploring different courses years ago. One of his favorite courses he has played at is Trout Lake Golf Club in Northern Wisconsin.

Two people who influenced and inspired Kevin the most in his career were Jerry and Joe Kessenich, who were both previously Kevin’s supervisors and were with PVGC since its inception.

Additionally, Dewey Stendahl had a great influence on Kevin throughout his life and especially during his 25 years of coaching youth baseball and hockey.

Doc Apr 15 2020 1 03 PMWhat's in Kevin's cart?

Each day, Kevin carries in his cart a jug of water for changing cups, a cup cutter (each staff member has their own..Kevin’s has been with him for over 20 years), a cup setter, a piece of pipe for rolling the holes, a cup puller for changing the cup locations, an awl (special screwdriver), a bucket of top dressing sand, clipboards for making notes as he drives around to make plans, a repair tool, and a canteen of water.

What does the future hold for Kevin? What are his aspirations?

Kevin plans (key word) to work two more seasons at PVGC and then retire. He hopes to continue working on the Grounds Crew at that point and finally be able to travel again. Who knows, he might buy a cheap van, throw his dogs in and head to Yellowstone or Glacier, he said. He hasn’t been to Yosemite since 1977, and would love to go back. Alaska is still number one on his list.

Is there anything that he misses about “old Pleasant View?” What does he not miss?

Kevin misses the rural atmosphere that used to surround PVGC. He misses the serenity of it. He remembers when there was nothing on either side of the beltline but farms. He also misses the old 18-hole set up. His favorite hole was the old 14; he loved how high you used to tee off and how the good golfers would try to cut the corner and get right on the green.

Do his co-workers have any nicknames for him? If so, what are they?

Doctor Hurd or Kev

What has been Kevin's favorite course project that his crew has done? What has been his least favorite?

The grow-in of the new golf course was both his favorite and least favorite project of his career. He remembers as the new Superintendent feeling overwhelmed at the large responsibility of building an entire new 9-hole course. Kevin remembers buying a small TV to keep in his office so he could watch the Packers play. After all, once you seed a new course, you have to water it nearly every two hours. Kevin devoted much of his time to building the new golf course. He remembers one time he was watering the course over night and saw an orange light fall through the sky, shooting something out onto the golf course. The next day, he found a meteorite on what is now Woods 3. It has been one of his most prized possessions ever since.

Kevin has been around PVGC for many years and has seen it all. In closing, he mentioned that seeing how the culture of golf has changed at PVGC over the years has been both fun and rewarding to watch. He remembers when golf was very much an elitist sport, and to watch it open it up to all kinds of people is neat. He said that when he became the Superintendent, there were two ways to play the role..some wear nice clothes and delegate jobs to people, then there’s Kevin’s way...

What is Matt's role at Pleasant View Golf Course?MattStatz2

Matt accepted the role as the Golf Course Superintendent in March of 2022. Prior to that Matt had been the Assistant Golf Course Superintendent since 2014. His main role is to coordinate the day-to-day operations of the golf course grounds. He generally arrives to work at 5am each day to formulate a plan and delegate tasks to the rest of the staff. Matt is educated in TurfGrass Management and does all of the spraying that keeps the golf course in pristine condition. Matt also oversees the technology side of the Maintenance Department; such as, the computer system that regulates the pump house, and the digital job board that assigns tasks and calculates labor hours. Matt also plays a role in the training of new staff members.

What is his background? What did he do before Pleasant View Golf Course?

Matt grew up in Cross Plains, where he went to Saint Francis Xavier Catholic School, and then Middleton High School. After high school, he went to study kinesiology at UW-Eau Claire. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Management and started to pursue Personal Training. At the time, his dream was to run a health club. He worked as a Personal Trainer for six months and then found enjoyment in coaching baseball and volleyball in the Lodi, Verona, Mount Horeb, and Madison School Districts. He also spent some time working as a Sales Associate at Dick’s Sporting Goods.

How did Pleasant View Golf Course come into Matt's life?

Matt began as a seasonal member of the Grounds Crew in 1996 when his uncle, Joe Kessenich, who was the Superintendent at the time, recruited him. Matt worked at Pleasant View Golf Course as a Crewman until 2006. At first, he disliked the early mornings, but grew to like working outdoors each day. He began working full-time in 2007 for the Maintenance Department and took over the Assistant Golf Course Superintendent role in 2014. Shortly after, he enrolled in Penn State’s online TurfGrass Management Associates Program, and completed his degree in 2016.

MattStatz1Aside from working at Pleasant View Golf Course, what are his other interests/passions?

Matt enjoys spending time with his two kids, ages six and ten. He still coaches volleyball for Saint Francis’s 5th, 6th, and 7th-graders. He also enjoys coaching his daughter’s softball team. Additionally, Matt spends time watching and playing in Home Talent Baseball League games. In the winter time while he’s not working at Pleasant View Golf Course, he spends most of his time recuperating and spending time with his neighbors and friends in Cross Plains.  MattStatzFamily

What does he feel is Pleasant View Golf Course’s most unique characteristic?

Matt enjoys the scenery and overall layout of the golf course. He feels that Pleasant View Golf Course has a lot to offer our players, including a great balance of hills and flat areas as well as lots of wildlife! Matt was once within 50 feet of a large buck between 8 Woods and 8 Prairie. Also, he fondly remembers in the late 90s, before the grow-in, there was also a coyote that used to lay in the fairways on the Woods course.

Where does Matt see Pleasant View Golf Course going in the future?

Matt would like to see Pleasant View Golf Course get involved in the First Green program of The Golf Course Superintendents Association. Their mission is “turning golf courses into classrooms.” The First Green program allows children to explore golf courses on school field trips for their science classes. Matt is also certified by The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf. He has spent time learning about: environmental planning; wildlife and habitat management; chemical use reduction and safety; water conservation; water quality management; and outreach and education. He serves as an ambassador for the environment and wants to continue to educate the public on what we do here at Pleasant View Golf Course to keep our golf course safe and healthy.

If he could choose three people to be in his foursome who have influenced his passion for golf the most, who would they be and why?

Matt gets out to golf now and again. His foursome would first include his uncle, Joe Kessenich, who introduced him to the golf industry back in the late 90s when he recruited him to work on the Grounds Crew part-time. Matt would also include Kevin Hurd, our former Golf Course Superintendent, as well as his father for inspiring his interest in sports at an early age. Fun fact--Matt’s father now also works in the Maintenance Department, mainly mowing the golf course from time to time.

What's in Matt's cart? IMG 3147

Matt carries with him a POGO, which measures: moisture, salinity, electroconductivity, and canopy temperature. He also has a drone in his cart that he uses to take aerial photos and videos of the course. He never forgets his Prism Gage, that checks the height and quality of the green cut; as well as his Stimpmeter to test the green speeds. Matt also carries with him a tape measure and his signature Gatorade water bottle. He tries to drink at least 100-120 ounces of water each day.

What does the future hold for Matt? What are his aspirations?

Matt aspires to continue to do great things as the Golf Course Superintendent of Pleasant View Golf Course. He hopes to stay in Cross Plains, coaching his kids as they continue to grow and go through sports.

Do his co-workers have any nicknames for him? If so, what are they?

“Statzy” and “Golden Boy.” Billy also likes to call him “Boss.”

What has been Matt's favorite course project that his crew has done? What has been his least favorite?

Matt’s favorite project that he’s worked on over his entire career at Pleasant View Golf Course has been the creation of the infamous sand traps on Prairie 6. Matt hired someone to train him to use the perma edge that sculpted the unique trap. Matt said, “People love these traps until they’re in them.” His least favorite project has been the irrigation “digs” full of muck that would take full days to complete during the grow-in period.
